Is Tutoring Necessary for the HSC?

When facing the pressure of the HSC exams, a lot of students and parents consider the option of tutoring. Although it may not be the magical solution to one’s academic problems and success, it definitely provides the necessary support for one to improve and reach their full potential. Nonetheless, it ultimately comes down to the student’s preferences.

The Benefits of Tutoring

Although not necessary for everyone, tutoring helps many HSC students.

  • Tutors are able to provide personalised help and attention to students, which traditional classroom settings rarely allow.
  • A tutor can adjust their teaching style and materials to focus on the student's particular weaknesses.
  • Students grasp difficult concepts at their own pace and they receive targeted feedback to improve their skills through individualised learning approaches.
  • Insider knowledge is often brought by tutors which includes understanding the HSC marking criteria. This knowledge can also involve sharing exam techniques or HSC experiences.
  • Students seeking high ATARs and excelling in competitive subjects can build confidence, and refine abilities with a tutor's help.
  • Tutoring gives students much-needed structure and motivation, reducing stress and keeping them accountable beyond academics during their HSC adventure.
  • Clarity and guidance towards achieving goals can be provided by tutoring for those who feel overwhelmed and may need an extra push.

Can Students Succeed Without Tutoring?

The short answer is: absolutely! A lot of students have achieved great outcomes in the HSC devoid of a tutor’s help. However, these students were able to do so due to some key factors:

  1. Personal study and motivation

Those who succeed in the HSC without external support usually have clear study goals and means of achieving them. That means that they create study timetables to stay motivated and on top of their work.

  1. Support from School Teachers

Having a good relationship with one’s school teacher where the student feels comfortable to ask questions and seek constructive feedback is imperative when working towards the HSC. School teachers are very familiar with the syllabus, texts and marking criteria and their input can be invaluable.

  1. Access to Resources

With the appropriate access to resources such as exemplar essays, text breakdowns and analyses, a student can adequately prepare for and succeed in the HSC exams.

  1. Strong Support System

Having a strong support system, consisting of family, friends, fellow peers, as well as teachers, can ensure the student’s smooth journey towards exams and their success. Making sure that the student is understood and that they have someone to talk to can prove crucial when mentally preparing for the task ahead.

Finding a Balance - Should You Start Tutoring?

Ultimately, the decision regarding whether you should start tutoring or not, depends on your unique needs and on the family’s preference or financial abilities. However, if you’re still unsure whether you need to or not, below are a few indicators to help you decide:

  • You Might Not Need a Tutor If:

    some text
    • You’re a top achiever with consistently high marks and confidence in your ability to pursue independent study and preparation for exams.
    • Your school or school teachers provide you with adequate study materials, resources and support. Additionally, you are sure that you’re able to use these to your advantage when studying for assessments.
    • You are aware of your learning style and have created effective study schedules implementing techniques that aid your personal journey and motivation.
  • A Tutor Could Help If:

    some text
    • You feel overwhelmed at school and are struggling to keep up with the pace of the class.
    • You require additional support and clarity when it comes to certain aspects of a module or subject area.
    • You have a very high goal, whereby an extra push or differing insight offered by the tutor will allow you to reach your full potential.
    • You need someone to hold you accountable and focused by assigning tasks and helping you learn materials gradually.

Taking into consideration the above, it is safe to say that tutoring is an invaluable tool for those students who seek additional support in order to reach their personal goals. However, that is not to say that you can’t succeed through your own independent study. It all depends on your self-discipline, motivation, knowledge of the subject, resources and external support from your environment. At the end of the day, success comes through finding what works best for your particular needs. Irrespective of whether or not you choose to start tutoring in preparation for the HSC, the key to achieving stellar results is studying smart, putting in consistent effort and having confidence in your abilities.

Remember that your HSC journey is shaped by you—tutor or no tutor. Having the correct mindset will lead you to your goals!
